Great pricing, great support, they called me to see if I had questions about getting started. They also offer shell access which is great for Perl programming

UnderNet Matrix

They advertise $6.95 for 1 Gig, 50gig trans. bandwidth, 1000 pop3 accounts, unlimited eForwarding. But thats if you sign in for a 2 year hitch. $7.95 for a 1 year, with a 3 & a 6 month option at $8.95 & $9.95 respectivly. But I feel it is worth the price so far to date. I not only recommend these guys. I bought up another domain and am transfering 10 others over to this host as the contracts with the present hosts expire. Free Domain Registration with the 1 & 2 year contracts.

Bluehost is a great service when it works, however it doesn’t seem to have worked for me so far! … Shortly afer I signed up with them (a few weeks ago) the server which was holding my account crashed, resulting in a fragmentation problem and a long period of downtime and broken stats. The stats problem still haven’t been fixed over a week after bringing it to their attention, apparently they have “other issues that have taken precidence” (sic). If a company has a good customer service, then surely ALL customer problems should take precedence? … Then I learn that people cannot send any messages with attachments to my bluehost account without having them returned by the bluehost mailserver, yet funnily enough, when someone attempts to send me a virus there, it gets through! … Overall, very poor so far, hope it improves!

Absolutely the worst hosting service I have ever had the misfortune of using. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these guys. If there was a negative rating these Bluehost.com would be a -5.

Their uptimes are about 50%, there are all kinds of hidden costs and “gotchas”, the services they promise – like MySQL and PHP – are broken, the support is non-existent. With thousands of decent hosting services out there save yourself the headaches and avoid these bozos!

I wrote some detailed info about my experiences in my blog at http://bluehost.blogspot.com if anyone is interested.

I host a few sites on bluehost, and it’s always worked well for me. Never had any downtime, reasonable price and has the features I need (php, mysql cpanel). They also let you host 5 domains which I’ve found useful.

Bluehost have offered great features and excellent reliability so far. Unfortunately I have been too busy to use many features, as I have been swamped by spam. They don’t give you access to sa-learn, so Spamassassin is effectively useless. Very frustrating, as providing this service would make them almost perfect! In a nutshell, only use them if you don’t want email, or intend to provide your own spam filtering somehow, or if you just can’t get enough of that lovely Spam!

They are down at least 20% of the time. Especially during late night hours. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for. Stay away from these guys for serious sites.

Bluehost offers the best hosting package of any comparable webhost in the same price bracket. I would go so far as to say that their included features and excellent service supercede those of pricier webhosts. The only other host that comes close is DreamHost whose package is just a few gigs/features short of Bluehost’s. When you sign up, the advertised price of 6.95/mo. is for a two year subscription. A reduced cost per mo. for a longer subscription is common for most webhosts. I have seen reviews of Bluehost that claim that this host tricks you into a binding two year contract. This is false. Their business practices are extremely ethical and it is clearly stated what you are signing up for. There are no contracts.

Furthermore, I have never had any downtime and have had an extremely easy experience transferring all my domains over to Bluehost. When PHP 5 became stable, there was single-click option to toggle between PHP 4 and 5 in my admin. I have had no problems manipulating the PHP config and have set up several sites on the same account.

Bluehost has amazing service. I have been able to reach them at all hours and generally anything I’ve managed to think up they can resolve in less than a day. I’ve even asked for upgrades to my acct and they have had me up and running with new features in the same day.

I apologize for the lengthiness of this review, but I really really love this host. They send out emails every so often about new features, upgrades, more bandwidth etc. They have great service, a great company outlook and a successful business model. You don’t get what you pay for — you get so much more. At 6.95/mo. I expect far less than what Bluehost offers.

And to Gary Vails’ detailed review that he links to, it is less of an objective review and more of a vomited rant. Read the comments, and do your own research before buying into scathing criticism. There are no hidden fees with Bluehost, no additional offers. If he somehow managed to charge himself for some invisible extra, that seems like user-error more than anything.

Lastly, if you are a mid-sized business, or even a small business with high traffic, you would most likely benefit from dedicated hosting, not shared-hosting. I tend to read a lot of these negative reviews and think that these companies/people don’t know how to find a webhost that meets their needs, so they just go with whichever common $7 host they can find and then are quick to complain when the smallest thing goes wrong. If you’re experiencing crazy downtime issues, difficult email config or whatever, maybe dedicated hosting would serve you better. If you’re trying to run a business, none of your overhead is ever going to be $7/mo.

Oh, and one more thing, those of you reading these reviews to make your decision, it is near impossible to write an objective review of any webhost after having been a customer for less than 3 months. There will be one-off cases where something went terribly wrong and you cancel your subscription, but it’s hard for me to believe negative reviews where people have only stayed on long enough to see the domain get pointed from the nameserver ;)
